3GPP Release 17 NTN adapted NB-IoT protocol stack

NTN NB-IoT

Non‐Terrestrial Networks (NTN) are reshaping 4G and 5G connectivity by extending coverage beyond traditional ground‐based infrastructure through satellite constellations. As demand for higher bandwidth and worldwide IoT applications grows, reliable satellite communication has become a fundamental element of next‐generation networks.

Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) is a low-power wide-area (LPWA) technology standardized by 3GPP to enable efficient communication for IoT devices with limited power and low data rate requirements. It operates within the LTE spectrum and supports massive machine-type communications (mMTC) by offering deep coverage, low device complexity, and extended battery life. With the rise of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), NB-IoT has been extended to support satellite-based connectivity, enabling global coverage in remote and underserved areas. 3GPP Release 17 introduced enhancements for NB-IoT over NTN, including support for extended timing advance, satellite Doppler compensation, and uplink timing alignment mechanisms, allowing NB-IoT devices to maintain robust communication links even with geosynchronous and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. This integration significantly broadens the scope of NB-IoT applications in areas such as agriculture, maritime, and environmental monitoring.

Core Feature List

1. NB-IoT UE Rel.17
Software defined implementation that supports attaching to an eNB / EPC in a bentpipe LEO /GEO scenario. Compensating the doppler effect and long adapted to work with long round-trip delays.
2.NB-IoT eNB Rel.17
Modified to broadcast satellite ephemeris over system information blocks, and extended timers for performing RRC connection setup / reconfiguration and EMM registration.
